New Cardinal to be Jose Gomez visits Santa Barbara

For all of the Catholics out there, yesterday was a time of great joy when the new Cardinal to be presided over Sunday mass at Our Lady of Sorrows church. Doug Kriegel and I were on the story and it was so fresh it wasn’t even in the newspaper yet so the only media was us. Jose Gomez is replacing Timothy Mahoney who is retiring. Gomez is scheduled to take over the Southern California diocese next year. Interestingly, the area he will encompass stretches from Orange County to Guadalupe at the end of Santa Barbara County.
One of the most curious things to me still about people is how much they are willing to follow and render their devotion to one man. When Gomez walked out of the church to the tables set up in the back of the building, I couldn’t help but notice how people just walked alongside him. Almost like chicks waiting to be fed by the hen. They didn’t give him one minute of breathing room. A very long line firmly stood to greet the new Cardinal to be, and were even kissing his hand.
