Flames coming out from underneath the hood of a Dodge Caravan next to a local Big 5 Sporting Goods store Saturday night has many bystanders wondering, what happened.
The call of a vehicle on fire came in at approximately 6:35PM. Initially it was reported as an abandoned vehicle, but a closer look had the driver exit the car before it ignited with flames. The driver of the vehicle, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Word that he saw smoke coming out from underneath the hood of his car while waiting at a stop light at the intersection of Calle Real and State Street. He decided to pull into the Five Points Mall parking lot where a nearby security guard heard a loud pop. “I told him to get out of the car!” After the driver exited, flames began sprouting out. The driver said it was at that point when he took out a fire extinguisher from the back of his car and attempted to put out the flames.
Shortly after, Santa Barbara City Fire arrived on scene to finish extinguishing the flames. A Santa Barbara City Fire Captain on scene believed that this was an engine compartment fire possibly electrical. The driver is doing fine. No injuries were reported and the fire was contained to the engine compartment of the vehicle. No damages were incurred by nearby vehicles or Big 5 Sporting Goods.
