Free Classes for the Homeless

The People’s Institute of Santa Barbara and the Academy of the Enlightened Actor have teamed up yet another year to offer the homeless classes in the arts free of charge.

For three years the People’s Institute has offered classes in dance, poetry, song writing, yoga, creative writing, drawing, ESL, and photography for members of the community at Casa Esperanza Homeless Shelter in Santa Barbara. The newest addition to the lineup of free classes is Drama. I spoke with Ottiliana Rolandsson who is in her second year of teaching the class: “I think it’s going to be wonderful.”

When asked about her expectations for the class this year, Rolandsson explained how important the first class is. “The balance on the first class is talking about what’s going to happen, but then if I throw them in too quickly it gets too scary. So it’s this balancing act of easing everyone in.”

All residents of Casa Esperanza are strongly encouraged to attend these courses, which last about six weeks.

There will be an episode of the class each week posted on YouTube at: youtube.com/EnlightenedActor
